Nettle is known as one of the most important and widespread medicinal plants in the world, used in traditional herbal medicine for a wide variety of therapeutic purposes for centuries. However, what is less known is that this wonderful medicinal plant is very rich in nutrients, including over 30% protein and a very high mineral content. Therefore, it is considered one of the most important and richest superfoods in the world!
Many people think that the stinging nettle's behavior is a bit antisocial, which is understandable, but also unfortunate, because it is just a disguise for the true nature of one of the most amazing, versatile and generous plants in Western herbal medicine. Few edible and medicinal plants provide such a wealth of natural resources, nourishing our bodies and nurturing our health, and stinging nettle is undoubtedly such a herbal ally.
The nature of the plant: Tough on the outside and delicate on the inside, it just looks unattractive, but it is full of tenderness, rich and nutritious - such is the nettle. It has a domineering character, and it thrives almost everywhere, in Israel and around the world: in wild areas, on the sides of roads, in gardens and near cattle grazing areas, and not only that, but its leaves and stems are covered with stinging hairs. If you just walk by it and ignore it, you will not be able to avoid the "hand of the nettle", and you will soon feel the familiar burning - just like electricity. This is thanks to the needle-like gills, which when touched inject silicic acids into the skin, known as "ant venom". It is indeed unpleasant, but in cases of arthritis it may actually be beneficial - so according to the ancient Romans. That is how it is with nettle, you may love it, and you may not, but once you encounter it, you do not easily forget it.
Wonderful nutritional values: One of the most prominent health benefits of nettle is its impressive nutritional profile: nettle leaves are rich in iron and also in chlorophyll – an antioxidant molecule that is similar in structure to hemoglobin in the blood. This is why in the herbal medicine tradition, nettle is used as a tonic, to “nourish the blood”, especially during periods of growth, pregnancy, breastfeeding and even to support the menstrual cycle.
Furthermore, nettle leaves contain amino acids, a vitamin complex (4 times more vitamin C than an orange, beta-carotene, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, E, K, folic acid) and minerals (calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, manganese, selenium, zinc) and trace elements, and in enteropathy it is also common to use them to improve the absorption of various nutrients from food.
Who would have believed that beneath this tough shell lies such richness? A daily supplement of the green, velvety, nutrient-rich leaves of nettle is very nutritious for women of all walks of life, as well as for men, and in general - for everyone, young and old alike.
