Boswellia resin belongs to the Burseraceae family of plants, and is native to Asia and Africa. The use of frankincense resin is documented as far back as the Temple period in the Land of Israel. Its Hebrew name, לבונה, symbolized its purifying and sanctifying qualities, and it was used as incense. Its strong aroma was used in religious and medicinal ceremonies throughout Asia, and it was traded and served as an important currency on the spice route between Africa and Asia. Frankincense is also mentioned in the tradition associated with the birth of Jesus, according to which three kings came from the East and brought with them frankincense, myrrh, and gold as gifts for the birth of Jesus.
In Chinese medicine, its name is RU XIANG, meaning “fragrant milk,” where it is primarily considered a blood stimulant. The resin is formed when the frankincense tree is injured and exudes a milky fluid that dries into a clear resin, which is why the Chinese use it to speed up the healing and healing of wounds and bruises.
The resin has an aromatic quality and antiseptic ability that helps with various infections.
